Stand up for a child, become a volunteer

Our volunteers represent a variety of ages and professions. Many work full time jobs, such as teachers and business professionals, while others are stay-at-home moms or are retired.

No legal expertise is required.CASA Staff provide complete training in areas of the court system, child advocacy, and developmental and behavioral issues.

Child advocate requirements:

  • 21 years of age or older
  • High school education or equivalent
  • Willingness to commit to 2 years as a volunteer
  • No felony convictions
  • No prior experience with juvenile court system or Children’s Division (formerly DFS) as an employee, and not a current foster care provider.

We recognize not everyone who wants to be a volunteer can commit to being a child advocate. CASA needs volunteers to provide assistance in office support, technology, and special events. These behind-the-scenes positions are important in helping us provide services to children in foster care.

CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home. They stay with each case until it is closed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence—the one adult who cares only for them.

The impact of abuse.

Imagine, if you can, how you would feel if the person you trust most in your life suddenly abandons you. Or imagine that this person touches you in a bad way.

Then, adding to this stress, someone removes you from your home and takes you to a strange place with people you’ve never met.

This is how foster children feel. They have little or no consistency. CASA volunteers fill that gap by consistently providing support and hope.

Most kids in foster care have never had a childhood. Children are robbed of their childhood when they’re abused and neglected. They suffer physically, emotionally, socially, and educationally. The impact often lasts into adulthood.
